The Irish word for Sligo (Sligeach)
means, "Shelly place."
So it is no surprise that Sligo is famous for its muscles and oysters.
Despite the frigid water, Sligo is known for having the best surfing.
Legend has it, Sligo once held the record for the biggest wave surfed.
The famous poet, William Butler Yeats, spent his holidays in Sligo as a child and was later buried there. He memorialized much of Sligo in his poetry.
